The original Shadowgate from 1987 was a groundbreaking entry in the adventure game genre, known for its unique first-person UI and creative, often fatal challenges. This beloved title is a hallmark of early Nintendo-era gaming. Now, after 35 years, the official sequel—Beyond Shadowgate—has been brought to life by the series' creator and a leading 8-bit-style adventure game studio.
With a world five times larger than Shadowgate, Beyond Shadowgate offers a sprawling adventure! Featuring over 250 game rooms in the Shadowgate realm, players will also embark on side quests that take them into two other classic first-person adventures: Déjà Vu and The Uninvited.
Built for both newcomers and die-hard NES fans, Beyond Shadowgate retains the charm of the 8-bit era while adding modern features like a vibrant color palette, auto-save, fast travel, a hint system, and 40 achievements. It’s fully compatible with Steam Deck, mouse and keyboard, and offers Xinput and DInput controller support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers.

Jeffrey Canam, aka GrahfMetal, is a Canadian independent creator of adventure games that capture the retro spirit of the 8-bit console era. Working with a small team as GrahfMetal Games, GrahfMetal has previously released Infested and Spectacle before collaborating with Zojoi on the commercial release of Beyond Shadowgate in 2024.
